Why batteries die here
Heat kills batteries faster than cold
Most people expect a battery to fail on a cold morning. In a climate like Gibraltar's it is the heat that does the damage — high under-bonnet temperatures wear a battery out from the inside, and it then fails on the first cool morning that asks anything of it.
Short journeys make it worse. If most of your driving is a few minutes at a time, the alternator never fully puts back what starting the engine took out.
Signs it is on the way out
Don't wait for it to strand you
- The engine turns over slowly, or sounds laboured, when you start it
- It starts fine after a long drive but struggles after the car has sat for a day or two
- Headlights dim noticeably at idle and brighten when you rev
- You have needed a jump start, even once
- The battery is several years old and has spent every one of those summers here
Already stranded?
A flat battery is one of the most common reasons people ring the recovery line. If the car won't start and you are not at home, call the 24 hour number — +350 58525000.
